Everyone loves a good ball cap to keep the sun out of your eyes or hide your messy hair. Now you can make those ball caps a little more personalized and show off your leather carving skills even more. Imagine this, a leather patch custom made by you on your hat.
All you really need is a small piece of leather. Scrap leather would work perfect enough for this as long as you can get it cut into the shape that you would like to put on your hat. I think a simple rectangle shape looks perfect for this type of project.
Next you proceed as you would any other carving leather project. Find a design that you like and make sure it fits within the shape of your patch. Personally I think flower patterns look pretty good on a ball cap. If you have a hard time thinking of or finding design there are free templates online that you can use.
Finishing the Design Off
After you have your design carved out on your patch add the finishing touches by beveling your edges and staining it the color that compliments the color of the hat you are mounting it onto. Generally any stain looks good for a hat patch, just be weary of dark browns with dark colored hats. You want a little bit of contrast to make your leather work pop out.
Mounting the Leather Patch
All that is left is mounting the patch onto your hat. There are several options to mounting it, but the most common are sewing or mounting glue. Sewing creates more opportunities for creativity with adding a stitch that compliments the design as well, it also suffices as a little stronger hold. Mounting glue however provides a seamless look, just make sure you find a glue Hefty enough to hold the patch onto your hat in a secure manner.
